GEO vs SEO: what actually changes.
Last updated August 5, 2026
The short answer
SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links; GEO (generative engine optimization) optimizes for being named inside a generated answer. The economics are different in one brutal way: Google's page one has ten slots and position four still earns clicks, but an AI answer names two or three brands and stops — there is no fourth place. You're either in the answer or you don't exist for that buyer.
The work overlaps but isn't identical. Classic SEO fundamentals still matter (crawlable site, fast pages, good content — Gemini and AI Overviews inherit Google's index). What changes: roughly 91% of AI citations come from third-party sources rather than your own site, so reviews, forums and roundups matter more than your blog; engines lift extractable passages (direct answers, tables, stats) rather than ranking whole pages; and answers are non-deterministic, so measurement means mention rates with confidence intervals, not a rank number.
What transfers from SEO
Your technical foundation carries over almost entirely: crawlable pages, server-rendered content, clean information architecture, structured data. Two engines make this literal — Google AI Overviews is built from Google's index, and ChatGPT Search runs on Bing's, so classic indexing hygiene (including Bing Webmaster Tools, which most teams ignore) directly feeds AI visibility.
Content quality transfers too, with a twist: engines favor pages that answer a question directly in the first 150 words, use tables and concrete numbers, and cite sources — the Princeton GEO study measured 30–40% visibility lifts from exactly those additions.
What breaks
Rank tracking stops describing reality — there's no position two in a paragraph. Click-through stops being the metric — a buyer can hear your name (or your competitor's) and never touch your site, leaving nothing in analytics. And the winner-take-most dynamic sharpens: engines typically name a handful of brands, so the gap between 'in the answer' and 'absent' is the entire game.
The biggest strategic shift is where the work happens: with ~91% of citations coming from third-party sources, GEO is mostly about being present in the places engines trust — review sites, Reddit, YouTube, category roundups — not about your own domain.
New work GEO adds
AI-crawler access management (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot in robots.txt — blocked accidentally on a surprising share of sites), llms.txt as a map for AI crawlers, per-engine strategy (Perplexity rewards Reddit and YouTube presence; Gemini rewards video and classic SEO; ChatGPT rewards press and Bing hygiene), and answer monitoring — watching what engines actually say about you, and re-measuring after every fix.
Do you need both?
Yes, and they compound: the same citable page can win a featured snippet and get lifted into an AI answer; the same review presence feeds Google's trust signals and Perplexity's citations. The teams getting this right treat GEO as SEO's successor discipline rather than a separate channel — same foundations, new scoreboard.
The place to start is knowing your current position: a free Visitd teardown measures how often each engine names you today, which competitor is winning your buyer questions, and whether your site is even readable by AI crawlers.
Questions, answered
Is GEO the same as AEO?
Effectively yes — AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) describe the same discipline: getting named and cited inside AI-generated answers. GEO has become the more common term for the practice; AEO is often used when talking specifically about answer engines like Perplexity.
Does ranking #1 on Google help my AI visibility?
It helps with Google AI Overviews (built from Google's index) and indirectly elsewhere, but it's no guarantee: you can rank #1 and still be absent from ChatGPT, which draws on Bing plus its own sources. Each engine needs its own checklist.
How do I measure GEO?
Mention rate: of the buyer questions that matter in your category, what share of AI answers name you — measured across many runs per engine because answers vary, and reported with a confidence interval. That's the number Visitd's score wraps, per engine and overall.
How long does GEO take to work?
Structural fixes (crawler access, llms.txt) register in weeks. Third-party citations — the 91% — build over one to three months as reviews, threads and roundups get crawled and absorbed. Anyone promising overnight AI rankings is selling something.
